Police will question former Begum Rokeya University vice-chancellor (VC) Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah in custody for five days over allegations of embezzling funds from a special development project at the institution.
Acting Judge Md Ibrahim Mia of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court passed the order on Wednesday after a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
On Jun 18, the ACC opened a case against five people, including Kalimullah and another former VC AKM Nurun Nabi over alleged irregularities in a special development project of the university.
The Detective Branch arrested Kalimullah on Aug 7 from his residence in Mohammadpur. His bail plea was rejected that day and he was sent to jail.
On Tuesday, ACC Assistant Director Minhaz Bin Islam, the investigation officer, applied for a 10-day custodial interrogation. The court set Wednesday for the hearing in the presence of the accused.
Kalimullah was produced before the court during the hearing. His lawyer Shahnaz Sumi opposed the petition and sought bail.
“Professor Kalimullah has done nothing outside the rules. In a university, the vice-chancellor cannot decide everything on his own. It is not possible for one or two people to embezzle money by themselves,” she argued.
She also described him as elderly and unwell, urging the court to reject the remand application and grant him bail.
ACC prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi opposed the bail plea, telling the court: “The ACC does not file a case overnight. Investigations are carried out over a long period, and the accused is well aware of it.”
After hearing both sides, the court ordered that Kalimullah be kept in custody for five days for questioning.
