A Mymensingh court has sentenced five people to life imprisonment in a murder case stemming from a land dispute in Haluaghat Upazila, ending a legal battle that lasted over 13 years.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Shamsuddin delivered the verdict on Sunday afternoon, convicting five residents of Haluaghat’s Mokamia village: Shukur Ali, Harez Ali, Amir Ali, Jomir Ali and Hatem Ali.
Each of them was also fined Tk 100,000, with another year's jail term in default of payment, said defence lawyer Harun-or-Rashid.
According to the case, a longstanding dispute over farmland existed between farmer Ahammad Ali and Shukur of the same village.
On Oct 14, 2012, Shukur, Amir and Jomir allegedly led a group of 20 to 25 people armed with sharp weapons and sticks, entered land under the possession of Ahammad’s wife Nurunnahar, and forcibly harvested paddy.
When Nurunnahar and his family members tried to resist, they were attacked indiscriminately with local weapons.
Nurunnahar, her grandmother Sufia Khatun, uncle Habibur Rahman and Khalilur Rahman were injured in the assault.
The attackers also vandalised Nurunnahar’s home and looted cash, according to the case.
The injured were later rescued and admitted to Haluaghat Upazila Health Complex.
Following the incident, Nurunnahar filed a case naming 25 suspects, including the five convicts.
Habibur later died while undergoing treatment 10–12 days after the attack.
Police submitted a chargesheet after investigation, while the court acquitted the remaining 20 suspects in the case.
