The Election Commission (EC) has restored the nominations of 53 candidates during the fourth day of appeal hearings for the national elections.

Among them was Abdul Haq of the Jamaat-e-Islami, running from Dhaka-2.

After the hearing on Tuesday at the Nirbachan Bhaban, he said: “I haven’t borrowed a single taka from anyone. The commission understood this and approved my appeal, validating my nomination.”

With Tuesday’s approval, more than 200 candidates have now had their nominations restored, EC spokesperson Ruhul Amin Mollik confirmed.

Earlier, after scrutiny, 723 nomination papers were cancelled, leaving 1,842 valid candidates.

One candidate’s nomination was later cancelled on appeal.

Over hearings from Saturday, 203 candidates regained eligibility, bringing the total number of valid candidates to 2,044.

The appeal process will continue until Jan 18.

On Tuesday, 15 appeal applications were rejected. In Noakhali-5 and Rajshahi-5, appeals against nomination acceptance were dismissed, keeping the candidates’ nominations intact.

Hearings for appeals numbered 281–380 will be held on Wednesday from 10am to 5pm.

A total of 645 appeals are expected to be completed by Jan 17.

According to the schedule, Feb 20 is the last date for candidates to withdraw nominations.

The final list of candidates and symbol allocation will follow.

Voting is set for Feb 12.

Polls in Pabna-1 and Pabna-2 constituencies remain suspended until further notice.
