Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the authorities to make Zakat management in Bangladesh more organised and effective.
The instruction came during a meeting at the Secretariat on Monday, said the prime minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon.
The prime minister also heard about the experience of working with zakat funds from Shaykh Ahmadullah, chairman of the As-Sunnah Foundation.
The discussion focused on strategic distribution methods to transform Zakat into a tool for permanent economic self-reliance, Rumon said.
Sharing his foundation's success, Ahmadullah told reporters that with minimal overhead, they recently trained 2,100 unemployed youths who collectively earned Tk 420 million in a single year.
"The prime minister was very pleased with these results. He has asked the religious affairs minister to explore possibilities for government-led initiatives using similar models," he said.
Ahmadullah proposed creating a regulatory framework for charity organisations to foster healthy competition in efficiency.
He also suggested establishing formal channels to tap into the estimated $600 billion annual global Zakat pool from Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries, which could significantly boost the national economy.
The prime minister also held separate meetings with advisors on public administration, finance, education, and ICT to discuss governance and digital reforms.
Later, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam Rita and State Minister Rashiduzzaman Millat met Tarique.
Following the meeting, Millat said: "The prime minister has instructed us to improve Biman’s service quality and resolve passenger harassment at airports."
