BNP, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal activists have laid siege to Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station after eight leaders of the ruling party’s student wing were sued over the alleged attack on National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary.
They held demonstrations outside the police station on Friday night, saying the case was “false and harassing”.
They demanded that the case be withdrawn.
The protests erupted soon after NCP Central Committee Joint Member Secretary Tareq Reza filed the case, naming eight people and accusing 110 to 115 other unidentified people, said station chief Asaduzzaman.
Shahed Ahmed, convener of the Islamic University unit of Chhatra Dal, was named as the prime suspect.
The seven other identified suspects include the incumbent and former top office-bearers of the district unit Chhatra Dal.
According to the case dossier, Patwary and other party colleagues were ambushed while leaving the Old DC Court Mosque in Jhenaidah after Jummah prayers.
It added that they were attacked physically with bricks, GI pipes, baseball bats and sharp weapons, injuring a number of NCP leaders and activists alongside Patwary.
In addition, a DSLR camera, lens, memory cards several mobile phones and cash were also allegedly stolen during the attack, the case says.
Local NCP activists and residents reportedly intervened to bring the situation under control. However, as the NCP activists were leaving, they were allegedly threatened with death.
Meanwhile, Patwary and other NCP leaders and activists were stranded when protests started outside the police station.
At one point, the protesters tried to storm the gate of the police station, with many throwing bricks from outside.
Later, the district BNP leaders calmed the protesters and removed them from the location.
After that, the NCP leaders, including Patwary, were safely escorted out under police guard.
Asaduzzaman said, “A written complaint has been received. It will be investigated and legal action will be taken.
“The NCP leaders and activists have left for Dhaka from Jhenaidah. Now the situation is normal,” he added.
