A Chhatra Dal leader has been stabbed to death in Barishal over a dispute that began during a “sweet distribution” programme following the announcement of a death sentence against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The incident took place in front of Agarpur Halima Mannan Hospital in Babuganj on Monday evening, police said.
The deceased, 30-year-old Rabiul Islam, was the son of Mizanur Rahman Hawlader Dulal of Agarpur village. He was the vice-president of the Jahangirnagar Union Chhatra Dal.
Sub Inspector Delwar Hossain, chief of the Agarpur police camp in Babuganj, said: "The Chhatra Dal leaders and activists were distributing sweets. They got into an argument over eating sweets. As a result, Rabiul was stabbed."
He was taken to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
Jahangirnagar Union Chairman Kamrul Ahsan Himu said, “Some Chhatra Dal activists distributed sweets after the announcement of the death sentence against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. They had a feud among themselves over the issue and Rabiul was ‘stabbed’. He died after he was taken to the hospital.”
Locals say that Rabiul was stabbed by a Swecchasebak Dal leader.
However, Jahangir Union Chhatra Dal General Secretary Palash said the event was to celebrate his birthday and they had organised the small gathering to cut a cake. But, due to “previous enmity” 10 people including Awal, Amir Khan, Firoz Chawkidar, Emdadul, Shahin Farazi and Shakil attacked Rabiul. They stabbed him with a sharp weapon.
