Gas valve burst causes pressure drop, disrupting supply across Dhaka

Areas including Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Shyamoli, New Market, Hazaribagh and Gabtoli are affected

A sharp drop in gas pressure has disrupted supply across Dhaka after a key valve exploded on the distribution line.

Residents in areas including Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Shyamoli, New Market, Hazaribagh and Gabtoli are receiving little or no gas supply.

State-run distributor Titas Gas said the problem was caused by the failure of a valve on Mirpur Road, as well as damage to a pipeline running beneath the Turag River.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the company said a four-inch valve on the Mirpur Road distribution line burst unexpectedly, causing a major leak.

To address the situation, several valves were shut temporarily, reducing supply and leading to severe low pressure across the city.

The disruption has been compounded by earlier damage to a gas pipeline beneath the Turag River near Aminbazar.

Titas Gas said the pipeline was struck by the anchor of a cargo vessel.

Although repairs were carried out, water entered the line during the process, further affecting supply.

The company said work was under way to replace the damaged valve and remove water from the affected pipeline to restore normal flow.

However, it did not give a timeline for when gas pressure would return to normal.

Titas Gas apologised to customers for the disruption, saying teams from multiple departments were working together to resolve the technical problems.

The gas shortage, which has persisted since last weekend, has caused widespread disruption for households and businesses.

Many residents have been unable to cook, while restaurants, bakeries and small food outlets have reported severe operational difficulties.

Some households have switched to electric stoves, while others are relying on takeaway food as an alternative.
