Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has instructed a Jamaat-e-Islami MP to be “more attentive” for reportedly raising a different topic during the legislative process in parliament as “such acts hamper the activities regarding the bills”.
Md Saiful Alam was warned in the morning session on Friday, soon after the Deposit Protection Bill, 2026 was tabled.
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury placed the bill to repeal the Bank Deposit Insurance Act, 2000 upon the speaker's go-ahead.
Hafiz immediately asked him to move a motion for the immediate consideration of the bill as proposed.
The Jamaat lawmaker from the Dhaka-12 constituency, however, intervened to seek the speaker’s permission to speak before the voice vote on the legislation.
The speaker reacted: “Honourable Member Saiful Alam from Dhaka-12, which bill do you want to object to and on what ground?”
“I was speaking in favour of the Bank Resolution Ordinance 2025,” answered Saiful.
Speaker Hafiz then told him that the bill was not placed yet and “there is no such bill now.”
As Saiful concluded his speech, the speaker advised him: "My God, honourable member, be more attentive.
“You are obstructing the process for adopting laws."
Soon afterwards, the bill was passed unanimously in a voice vote.
Right before the lunch break, Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman informed the speaker that the agenda initially given to them included the “Bank Resolution Act”, leaving them confused whether it will be raised separately or not.
Speaker Hafiz assured that it would be tabled later.
A total of 10 bills were passed in the morning session.
