Actress Shomi Kaiser has secured bail in an attempted murder case linked to an attack on students during last year's anti-discrimination movement protests.
On Monday, the High Court granted her bail and disposed of an earlier rule.
The case stems from an incident in Dhaka's Uttara, in which Zubair Hasan Yusuf, an honours student at Tongi Government College, was allegedly attacked during a protest march on Aug 4, 2024, the day before the fall of the Awami League government.
On Apr 9, the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court issued an arrest warrant against Shomi in connection with the case.
Earlier, on Mar 12, she had been given bail in another case filed at Uttara East Police Station involving attempted murder charges.
Shomi, the former president of the e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB), was arrested on Nov 5 last year from a house in Dhaka's Uttara.
After being denied bail in the lower court, she petitioned the High Court, which granted her interim bail on Dec 10, 2024.
The state appealed the decision, leading to the chamber judge of the Appellate Division staying the bail order and referring the application to the regular bench for hearing.
The Appellate Division upheld the stay order and set a deadline for the High Court to dispose of the related rule. In line with that directive, the High Court concluded the hearing and granted her bail, thereby disposing of the rule.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government on Aug 5, 2024, Shomi resigned from her role at e-CAB on Aug 14. She was among several prominent cultural figures associated with the previous Awami League regime who were implicated in cases related to the July Uprising.
Shomi, the daughter of martyred intellectual Shahidullah Kaiser and former MP Panna Kaiser, was a popular actress in the 1990s and later moved into entertainment production.
She became involved in Awami League politics and served for many years as the president of the e-CAB and as an FBCCI director.
Earlier, in 2024, she had sought the party’s ticket to run for the Feni-3 constituency in the 12th national election, but did not receive it.
