A woman in Shariatpur has been detained after allegedly killing her husband during a domestic row and dismembering his body before attempting to conceal the remains in a neighbour’s refrigerator.
She was reportedly caught after the smell raised suspicion.
Palang Model Police chief Shah Alam said body parts were recovered from multiple locations on Friday around 9:30pm based on information the detained woman provided.
The suspect, Asma Akter, is the wife of Zia Sardar of Ward 7, Dakkhin Mahmudpur in Shariatpur Sadar Upazila.
Asma, originally from Pirojpur, had married Zia -- a Malaysia-based expatriate -- eight years ago after the two got acquainted over the phone.
It was a second marriage for both. Zia had been renting a flat for Asma near Shabnur Market at North Palang in Shariatpur town.
When he returned to Bangladesh last year, the couple moved together to a house behind Grameen Bank at Chandrapur Bazar.
Based on initial interrogation, officer Alam said a domestic dispute had been brewing between the couple.
"On Tuesday night, during an argument, Asma struck her husband on the head with a rod, killing him. She then cut the body into six pieces with a knife, separating the flesh from the bone, and kept the remains in a drum and a fridge for three days.”
He added, "On Friday night, she hired an auto-rickshaw and dumped one part of the body wrapped in white plastic near the Padma riverbank at Mulfatganj.
“She then disposed of the remaining parts in sacks at Brikshatala in Atong of Shariatpur Municipality."
Asma then took the flesh to her former flat in the Shabnur Market area, hoping to store it in a tenant's fridge.
The smell drew the attention of locals, who rang emergency service 999.
Police arrived and opened the drum, confirming their suspicions.
"When we questioned her, she confessed to everything. Based on what she told us, we recovered the skull and bones from a pond at Brikshatala" the officer said.
On the same night, Nariya Police recovered four severed limbs from the Padma riverbank.
Speaking in front of locals after her detention, Asma said her husband used to beat her regularly.
"On the night of the 12th of May, during an argument, I hit him on the head with a rod and he fell against the door.”
“I did not realise the blow would be so hard. I sat with his body all night. The next day I cut it up and disposed of the pieces in several places. I still cannot understand how it all came to this," she added.
The victim's relative Shahadat Hossain Shahed said, "My brother married that woman while he was abroad. After returning home, they lived in a separate rented place.
“She killed my brother, put him in a drum, and left the body there. Police have detained her. I want the culprit punished."
Ranu Begum, who lives near Shabnur Market, said: "Asma came to store rotting flesh in the fridge and the smell spread. We grew suspicious and called 999. Police came and took her away along with her husband's flesh."
Officer Alam said an investigation was under way to determine whether anyone else was involved.
"Legal action will be taken accordingly," he added.
