A young man has died in police custody in Brahmanbaria’s Nabiganj Upazila, with his family alleging that he was illegally detained for five days and tortured.
The incident occurred at the temporary police camp in Salimganj on Sunday evening, according to Brahmanbaria Police Superintendent Ehteshamul Haque.
The victim’s elder brother later brought charges against four people, including Sub-Inspector Md Mahim Uddin, the chief of the camp, as well as 20 to 25 unidentified suspects.
The charges include unlawful detention and torture leading to death.
The dead, Md Abdullah, 23, was the son of Md Abul Hossain from Baherchar village in Bancharampur Upazila.
According to the family, Abdullah had been in police custody at the camp from Tuesday evening until Sunday evening. The other suspects in the case include Tabi Mia, 34, and Al Amin, 32, from the same area, as well as Ainal Hossain, 30, from Baherchar.
Police and family members reported that on Sept 17, a theft occurred at Tabi’s house in Salimganj. Tabi’s relative lodged a complaint with Nabiganj Police, and on the morning of Sept 23, Tabi, along with 20 to 25 people, detained Abdullah near the autorickshaw stand in Salimganj Bazar, suspecting him of the theft.
Initially, Abdullah was beaten on the road and then taken to Tabi’s house, where he was tortured and detained, they added.
Later, Abdullah was handed over to SI Mahim at the camp, where he received initial medical treatment at a local hospital before being sent back to the camp.
Officer Mahim, however, kept Abdullah detained in the camp without informing anyone.
Abdullah's condition worsened, and on Sunday afternoon, he was taken to a private hospital.
When his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, where he died at 6pm while undergoing treatment.
Abdullah’s cousin, Shakil Mia, said: “They brutally beat my cousin over false charges of theft. They inserted needles into his feet, used pliers to peel off skin from his forehead, and tortured him in the Salimganj Police Camp.”
Attempts to contact SI Mahim and Tabi for comment over the phone were unsuccessful.
SP Ehteshamul said Abdullah had been illegally detained and tortured at the camp.
“We have footage from the camp's CCTV cameras showing medical treatment being provided [to Abdullah] at various times,” he said. “An operation to arrest the suspects is under way.”
In a statement, Ehteshamul said Mahim had been temporarily suspended following the incident.
