Police have arrested nine suspects, including two brothers said to be members of the so-called “Kobji Kata Group”, over the attack on police in Adabar.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s public relations wing said in a statement that the arrests were made on Wednesday night in Keraniganj and Savar.

The detainees are bothers Md Jony, 24, and Md Rony, 27, Md Osman, 20, Md Nazir, 20, Md Raju, 27, Md Shakil, 19, Md Abul Kamal Azad, 19, Md Rezu Khan Alam, 22, and Md Al-Amin, 18.

Police had earlier said six people were arrested on Monday. Following the attack that night, officers also detained 102 people, five of whom were later shown arrested in the case over the assault on police.

According to police, the incident began when one 'Polash', 20, a polytechnic student, went to Sunibir Housing in Adabar to meet his girlfriend.

Local men allegedly detained the pair and demanded a large sum of money, moving them between flats and calling Polash’s father from his phone to seek ransom.

The father phoned 999, and when police arrived, assailants allegedly attacked officers as well as Polash’s mother and younger brother.

A police constable, Al Amin, the driver of the patrol vehicle, was hacked with a sharp weapon and admitted to Suhrawardy Hospital with injuries to his hand and other parts of his body.

Despite initial reports that a couple had been “held for ransom”, investigators are now exploring a different angle.

“Our preliminary assessment is that the boy fell into a honey trap. We will investigate further,” Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Ibne Mizan told bdnews24.com on Tuesday.
