The Appellate Division and the High Court Division have started hearing cases virtually in a bid to save energy as Bangladesh faces frequent power cuts amid growing fuel crisis driven by the Middle East escalations.
A total of 707 cases were heard and 177 were disposed of on the opening day of the virtual operations on Wednesday, says an advisory.
The Appellate Division (including the Chamber Judge Court) heard 95 cases and disposed of another 21 cases.
In the High Court Division, 612 cases were heard and 156 cases were disposed of.
The advisory also orders reduction in the use of electricity during court sessions. It also instructed the apex court to use 30 percent less fuel in vehicles.
The two divisions will hold virtual hearings on Wednesdays and Thursdays until further notice to save fuel and electricity given the current global economic situation.
The daily cause list and virtual (meeting) IDs of cases that can be heard in virtual presence in both divisions are published on the Supreme Court website.
On Tuesday, lawyers demanded the decision to be reversed, citing concerns over its impact and lack of consultation.
They said such decisions had previously been taken after discussions with leaders of the legal professionals, but this time the decision to introduce virtual courts had been “imposed” without consultation.
