Devotees have prayed for Iran’s victory in its war against the US and Israel during the Eid prayer congregation at the old trade fair grounds in Dhaka’s Agargaon.
The congregation was held at 8am on Saturday and was centrally organised by the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
In addition to prayers for the wellbeing of everyone’s families, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, and the people of Bangladesh, the imam also prayed for Iran to be given the strength to overcome the attack, to achieve victory in the conflict, and for the plans of non-Muslims to be foiled.
The Eid prayer was attended by worshippers from different areas of Dhaka, including DNCC Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton, Jamaat-e-Islami central leader Mubarak Hossain, and officials from the DNCC.
The DNCC said it was building a large pavilion at the old trade fair grounds to allow 10,000 people to pray at the same time. Arrangements were made for 500-700 women to pray in another pavilion next to it.
Although there was light rain at the start of the prayer service, it did not disrupt proceedings. Rover Scouts members were seen distributing polythene bags to devotees to wrap up their shoes before the prayers.
Aminul Islam, aged about 70, came to Agargaon from Badda to pray alongside three generations of his family. He was accompanied by his son Aminul Bahar and grandson Intizar Amin Hamim.
Income tax lawyer Aminul Bahar said he had come to pray at the DNCC-organised congregation as a local resident.
The atmosphere was good, he said, and he took joy in praying alongside everyone.
Businessman Matiur Rahman came with his family, both men and women, from the 60 Foot area of Mirpur. After the service, he was on his way home with his granddaughter Samia.
Matiur said his local mosque only has prayer facilities for men. As the DNCC had arranged facilities for women as well, the family had come to the congregation to pray together. They prayed for their family members, countrymen and the whole Muslim community, he said.
Suraira Akhter came to the Eid congregation with her sister and daughter from North Kafrul. It was her first time attending the event.
The housewife said she had also decided to attend the Agargaon congregation because prayer facilities for women were available at the location. As the venue was large, she did not face any problems.
Another woman from Mirpur 10 said she had come to the Eid congregation with two male members of her family and her mother.
"I always come here because there are prayer facilities for women,” she said. “I prayed alongside everyone and prayed for everyone."
In a brief speech before the prayer, Administrator Milton said the DNCC had tried its best to make good arrangements for everyone, saying if there were any deficiencies, steps would be taken to address them in future to ensure everyone can offer prayers in greater comfort.
He promised devotees that he would take steps to make Dhaka city beautiful, clean and liveable.
