Five rivers in the northeast of Bangladesh are flowing above the danger level. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Water Development Board (WDB) has predicted that the flooding situation in the Netrokona District may deteriorate.
Emon Kalyan Das, assistant engineer of the centre, said on Friday evening: “The water levels of the five rivers are flowing above the pre-monsoon danger level at several points so far. The rainfall is not stopping in the Netrokona district. This trend may continue for another three days. Due to this, there is a possibility of the flood situation deteriorating there and new areas being flooded.”
The regular bulletin of the Flood Forecasting Centre on Friday said that, as of the evening, the Naijur River in the Sunamganj District is flowing above the pre-monsoon danger level at Jagannathpur point, the Bhugai-Kangsha River in the Netrakona District at the Jariajanjail point, the Someshwari River at the Kalmakanda point, the Magra River at the Netrakona and Atpara points, and the Sutang River in the Habiganj district at the Sutang-Railway Bridge point.

The FFWC says the water levels of the Surma-Kushiyara rivers in the Sylhet district in the haor basin of the northeastern part of the country have increased in the last 24 hours. On the other hand, the water level of the Surma-Kushiyara River in the Sunamganj district is stable, the water level of the Bhugai-Kangsha River has increased and the water level of the Dhanu-Baulai River is stable.
The centre's data says that no significant rainfall was observed in the northeastern part of the country in the last 24 hours. However, moderate rainfall was observed in the Haor basin in the interior.
The FFWC, citing the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) and global meteorological organisations, says that moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast in the region for the next three days.
If 12 to 22 millimeters of rain falls in 24 hours, it is considered moderate, if 23 to 43 millimeters, it is considered moderately heavy, and if 44-88 millimeters fall, it is considered heavy rainfall.
The FFWC says that the water level of the Surma-Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj districts may remain stable for the next day and may increase for the next two days. During this time, the water level of the Surma and Kushiyara rivers may flow at the warning level.
The water level of the Bhugai-Kangsha and Dhanu-Baulai rivers in the Netrokona and Kishoreganj districts may increase for the next three days. The Baulai River may flow above the pre-monsoon danger level on the second day at the Khaliajuri point. As a result, the flooding situation may deteriorate in the low-lying areas adjacent to the Haors of Netrokona district and new low-lying areas may be flooded, the FFWC warned.
The water levels of the Manu, Khowai and Juri rivers in the Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts are likely to rise over the next three days. The water level of the Juri river is likely to rise rapidly on the second day and the water levels of the Manu and Khowai rivers are likely to rise rapidly on the third day and flow above the pre-monsoon danger level.
As a result, the FFWC has warned that flood conditions may prevail in the low-lying areas adjacent to the Haors of the Moulvibazar and Habiganj districts.
