In addition to making online tax returns mandatory for all public sector workers in the Dhaka, Gazipur, and Narayanganj city corporation areas, the government is encouraging all taxpayers to submit their tax returns online.
The National Board of Revenue has been encouraging online tax submissions for the past few years. In order to ease return filing and tax compliance for the 2024-25 fiscal year, the NBR launched an online return filing system on Sept 9.
To avoid any hassle, taxpayers can submit their returns online instead of as a hard copy.
Individual taxpayers can prepare their returns and submit them online by visiting the NBR-run website www.etaxnbr.gov.bd. The submission requires registration.
As such, the mobile number used by the taxpayer should be verified with the citizen’s national ID card. For verification, dial 1601.
If biometric information is included in the profile, it will not cause any difficulties.
Taxpayers will not have to calculate the tax on their income and wealth themselves. It will be handled automatically.
For this automatic calculation, a taxpayer has to submit their bank account status, their interest information, and the bank account transaction numbers from Jul 1 the previous year to Jun 30 this year. There is no need to submit any proof or papers.
Taxpayers will also be able to pay their taxes through internet banking, card payments (debit or credit card) and mobile banking.
They will also be able to download and print copies of submitted returns, receipts, income tax certificates, TIN certificates, and the e-returns of previous years.
The NBR has also set up a service centre to assist taxpayers who face any issues related to e-returns. Queries on e-returns can be resolved immediately by calling 09643717171 during office hours.
The eTax Service option at www.etaxnbr.gov.bd can also help taxpayers solve any issues if a written complaint is filed.
