Chattogram city is stepping into the era of smart lighting, with around 467 kilometres of its roads set to be equipped with energy-saving and eco-friendly lamps.
The city authority inked an agreement with an Indian contractor to roll out a Tk 2.61 billion project during an event at a hotel in the port city on Saturday.
The project, titled the Modernisation of City Street Light System at Different Areas Under Chattogram City Corporation in Bangladesh, will be executed by the Indian contractor Shapoorji Pallonji and Company Private Limited.
India is funding 82.20 percent of the project through the line of credit-3 from the Bangladesh government, totalling Tk 2.14 billion. The government will cover the remaining 17.80 percent, amounting to Tk 464.30 million.
During the event, Local Government Minister Tajul Islam said the implementation of this lighting project would lead to a 15 percent reduction in electricity consumption and a 50 percent decrease in costs.
Following the project's implementation, Pranay Kumar Verma, the Indian high commissioner to Bangladesh, said: "This marks Chattogram's progression towards becoming a smart city, with smart lighting planned for 460km of roads in the city."
He added: "We are committed to fostering an eco-friendly, sustainable, integrated, and aesthetically pleasing future for both nations. Our goal is to cut down carbon emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and safeguard the environment."
