Supreme Court lawyer Ruhul Quddus Kazal has been appointed as attorney general, the state’s top law official.
In a notification on Wednesday, the law ministry announced that Kazal would serve in the role until further notice.
Kazal, a BNP National Standing Committee member and a three-time secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, becomes Bangladesh’s 18th attorney general. He is also the chairman of the executive committee of the Bangladesh Bar Council.
He succeeds Md Asaduzzaman in the post. Asaduzzaman had resigned to contest the Feb 12 national election as a BNP candidate. He has since been appointed the law minister in Tarique Rahman's cabinet.
Born on Nov 19, 1970 in Jhenaidah's Maheshpur Upazila, Kazal completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in law at Dhaka University before enrolling as an advocate with the Bangladesh Bar Council in 1995.
He also worked briefly as a journalist during his student years.
Kazal later went to the United Kingdom for further legal studies. He earned a postgraduate diploma in law from City University in London before completing his training to qualify as a barrister in England and Wales in 2006.
During the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami coalition government, he served on a diplomatic posting in the United Kingdom as second secretary at the Bangladesh High Commission in London from 2003 to 2006.
After returning to Bangladesh, he resumed legal practice and was granted permission to practise in the Appellate Division in 2008.
Kazal has been involved in politics since his student days. While at university, he served as central law affairs secretary of Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal, the ruling BNP's student affiliate. He is now senior joint secretary general of the pro-BNP Jatiotabadi Ainjibi Forum.
During the 15 years of Awami League rule, he was also at the forefront in the legal battles facing BNP leaders and activists. He was also part of the BNP's legal team that fought cases on behalf of former prime minister Khaleda Zia and incumbent premier Tarique Rahman.
In March 2024, Kazal was arrested and sent to jail in connection with a case over a commotion and brawl over the counting of votes in the Supreme Court Bar Association elections. He was later released on bail.
Before the 13th parliamentary election, he was a member of the BNP’s central election management committee. The BNP's legal aid sub-committee was later formed under his leadership.
