A Dhaka court has ordered the cancellation of plot allotments in the Purbachal New Town project awarded to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s nephew Radwan Mujib Siddique Bobby and niece Azmina Haque Siddiq Ruponti.
Judge Robiul Alam of the Fourth Special Judge’s Court delivered the verdict on Monday, directing RAJUK to revoke the allocations, said Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) counsel Khan Md Moinul Hasan Lipon.
The court handed Bobby and Ruponti seven years in prison each in two separate cases filed over alleged irregularities and corruption in the allotment process.
One case concerns the plot allocated to Bobby, while the other relates to a plot awarded to his younger sister Ruponti.
Hasina was sentenced to a total of 10 years in prison in the two cases.
British MP Tulip Siddiq, the sister of Bobby and Ruponti, was sentenced to two years in jail in each of the two cases, for a total of four years.
Each case names 18 accused, according to the ACC.
Among them, only one accused -- Khurshid Alam -- has been arrested.
He was produced before the court for the verdict and was sentenced to a total of two years in prison in the two cases.
The remaining accused, who were tried in absentia, were sentenced to five years in prison each.
All of the convicts have also been fined Tk 100,000, with six additional months in jail if they fail to pay.
The trial proceeded with Hasina, Rehana, Tulip and others shown as absconding, meaning no lawyers were able to represent them during the hearings.
