Activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and the Anti-discrimination Student Movement have blocked a road in Chattogram city demanding the removal of the chief of Patiya Police Station.
Around 4pm on Wednesday, the protesters gathered outside the Chattogram Range DIG's office on Zakir Hossain Road and occupied the road.
An hour earlier, a group of youths identifying themselves as members of NCP and the student movement began chanting slogans outside the DIG office as part of their sit-in protest.
The demonstrators called on the DIG to come downstairs and listen to their demands.
At one point, they moved onto Zakir Hossain Road and stopped all traffic.
“We asked them to enter the DIG sir’s office, but they insisted that he come down instead. Eventually, they went out to the street and began their sit-in there,” Deputy Commissioner (North) Amirul Islam of Chattogram Metropolitan Police told reporters.
On Tuesday, members of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement detained a Chhatra League leader in Patiya's Shaheed Minar area and took him to the local police station, demanding that police formally arrest him.
According to local reporters, around 9:30pm on Tuesday, activists of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement detained a BCL leader in Patiya's Shaheed Minar area and brought him to the police station. They asked the police to formally arrest him.
When the activists allegedly tried to physically assault the BCL leader at the police station, officers intervened, leading to a scuffle in which several people were injured, the journalists said.
In protest, the activists announced a plan to surround the police station via social media.
On Wednesday morning, protesters gathered outside the Patiya Police Station and later blocked the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar Highway in the Bypass area.
