A child, a pregnant woman, an elderly woman and 10 others have been rescued from a flood-hit shack in Chattogram's Banshkhali Upazila after rising water left them stranded.
On Wednesday, floodwater submerged the area near Chechuria Bridge over the Jalkadar Canal.
Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel rushed to the scene after receiving a call through the national emergency service, 999, that night.
Photos and videos of the rescue later spread on social media, showing two firefighters wading through chest-deep water while holding onto a rope.
One carried an umbrella to shield the child from the rain.
The 8-month-old infant was placed inside a large cooking pot and carried across the flooded stretch to safety.
Banshkhali Fire Station officer-in-charge Mizanur Rahman said the rescue team received the emergency call around 8:30pm.
It took about an hour to set up ropes and rescue equipment before firefighters evacuated all 13 people, including the elderly woman, the pregnant woman, the infant and several children aged around 7 or 8.
Strong currents meant the operation continued until after 10:30pm, he said.
Mizanur said days of heavy rain had inundated several parts of Banshkhali.
Firefighters have so far rescued another 30 people from different locations and cleared large trees that had fallen onto roads, he noted.
As of about 1:15pm on Thursday, emergency teams were still receiving reports of people stranded by floodwater in different parts of the Upazila.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md Masudur Rahman said on Wednesday night that about 6,500 people in Banshkhali had been marooned by flooding.
