Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has called for the cooperation of foreign friends to help achieve the vision of a 'new Bangladesh'.
"The sacrifices made by young people have given us a great opportunity. We do not want to lose this chance," he said during a reception on Tuesday evening, held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Yunus also mentioned that their struggle has created a platform for building a better future for the country.
The chief advisor said, "Through fundamental changes in the existing state structures and institutions, the youth aim to construct a new Bangladesh. We need your support to turn this vision into reality."
According to the state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, or BSS, the reception was organised by the government to mark the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's membership in the UN.
The event was attended by Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu, and representatives from various countries.
Bangladesh became a full member of the UN on Sept 17, 1974.
During the reception, Yunus, along with photojournalist and writer Shahidul Alam, unveiled two books focused on the student-led uprisings in Bangladesh.
Yunus honoured the sacrifices of the students and urged that their dreams for a 'new Bangladesh' must not be forgotten.
“The entire nation is united today. We do not want to disappoint those who dreamed of a new Bangladesh,” said the chief advisor.
He also highlighted the government's efforts to establish a new electoral system through institutional reforms.
Yunus said, "The youth had no dreams because tyranny had crushed their hopes. Therefore, they did not hesitate to stand against bullets to bring down the autocrats.”
He called on foreign allies to support Bangladesh’s efforts to meet the democratic aspirations of its young generation.
"Bangladeshi youth have shown immense courage and determination. They did not hesitate to face bullets and become disabled for the cause. We need your support to build a democratic Bangladesh that reflects their dreams," said Yunus.
