The process to extradite former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed from Dubai is under way, Prime Minister's Information Advisor Zahed Ur Rahman has said.
At the Secretariat on Tuesday, Zahed said Dubai Police arrested Benazir with assistance from Interpol over cases involving corruption, passport forgery and other allegations.
“The extradition process to bring him back to Bangladesh to face trial is ongoing. This is one of the most significant achievements in the recent history of the Bangladesh Police, he added.
The capture of the once-powerful police chief, who headed both the Bangladesh Police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) during the Awami League regime, first came to light on Sunday.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed shared the update in parliament on the day, noting that Dhaka must file a formal extradition request within 30 days to secure his return.
He expressed hope that Benazir could be brought back quickly after completing the required formalities.
On border push-ins, Zahed said India’s Border Security Force (BSF) had attempted to push in 131 people through border points in Kushtia, Chuadanga, Satkhira, Panchagarh, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Thakurgaon and Jamalpur.
He said those attempts were foiled because of “firm resistance” by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
At the same time, he said authorities also blocked attempts by 89 people to enter through the Myanmar border, while 21 Bangladeshi nationals were successfully repatriated.
Zahed said the 57th director general-level border conference between BGB and BSF took place in New Delhi from Jun 8 to Jun 11.
He said Bangladesh lodged strong protests on the occasion over push-ins and border killings.
The meeting also focused on maintaining peace, security and stability along the frontier, preventing smuggling, strengthening joint patrols and discussing other issues of mutual interest, he added.
