The North South University (NSU) has permanently expelled student Apurba Pal after he was accused of desecrating the Quran on campus.
On Sunday, the university administration also decided to file a lawsuit against the student.
Faizullah Wasif, assistant director of the university’s Public Relations Office, confirmed the decision, saying that the university's disciplinary committee held an emergency meeting over the matter.
Apurba is in the custody of police.
An official statement from NSU said Apurba was seen desecrating the Quran on Saturday at the university campus. Witnesses reported the incident, after which the university's proctorial body and security department intervened to take control of the situation.
“At that time, other students exhibited great patience, maintaining an atmosphere of harmony, unity, and coexistence,” the statement read.
Apurba was a student of the Media, Communication, and Journalism department. Asif Bin Ali, a lecturer of the department, told bdnews24.com that Apurba had previously been temporarily expelled.
Earlier in the day, Apurba was sent to jail after police arrested him in a case on charges of desecrating the Quran. The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman ordered his detention after hearing the appeal from the investigation officer.
Vatara Police Sub-Inspector Chand Mia, in charge of the case, applied for Apurba's detention. The case was filed by SI Hasmat Ali of Vatara Police.
On Saturday night, several videos surfaced on Facebook, accusing Apurba of the act. The videos sparked outrage, and a demand for his arrest spread on social media. Later that night, a crowd gathered outside his home in the Bashundhara Residential Area.
Police arrived to detain the student but faced resistance from the enraged crowd. After an intense standoff, police managed to arrest Apurba around 2:45am, and the case was filed shortly after.
