Police have identified the man shot dead in Dhaka’s New Market area as “top criminal” Khandaker Naim Ahmed Titon.

After the incident on Tuesday evening, police said: “From different sources, we have initially learned that the deceased is top criminal Titon. We are trying to know more.”

Titon was named in the list of 23 top criminals published in 2001 during the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami coalition government.

His brother-in-law Sanjidul Islam Emon was also put on the list.

Both were involved in the Harish-Joseph criminal group of Mohammadpur. Titon carried out his activities in Dhanmondi and Hazaribagh.

After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on Aug 5, 2024, Titon and several other top criminals were released from prison. Since then, Titon has not appeared in court again.

He was shot dead by two masked motorcyclists in the Bottola area outside Dhaka University’s Shahnewaz Hall near New Market around 8pm on Tuesday.

New Market Police chief Md Ayub previously said, “We found a lot of blood at the scene. We do not yet know who the victim is.

“The injured person was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and one of our teams has gone there.”

Md Mezbah Rahman, a student who rescued the victim and brought him to DMCH, said two men arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire, shooting several times at the man.

People nearby tried to chase them, but the attackers escaped on the same motorcycle, he said, adding that they also fired shots to scare those pursuing them while fleeing.

Witnesses said they heard at least five gunshots at the scene.
