An elderly woman has been killed as the wall of a mud building collapsed onto her in Narsingdi’s Palash Upazila.

The incident occurred in Malita village around 10:45am on Friday, said Md Monirul Islam, chief of Palash Police Station.

The victim, believed to about 65 years of age, was killed on the spot, he said. Police have yet to confirm her identity.

About 70 other people have been injured while trying to rush out of different buildings in the district. They have been admitted to hospitals across the district and in Narsingdi Sadar.

Several of them have been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the tremor, which struck at 10:38am on Friday, had a magnitude of 5.7 and was centred about 13km from Dhaka at a depth of 10km.

The US Geological Survey put the magnitude slightly lower, at 5.5, and located the epicentre about 14km west-southwest of Narsingdi.

Farida Gulshan Ara Kabir, resident medical officer at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, said at least 53 people had been hospitalised with injuries due to the earthquake panic.

“Fifty-three people with different kinds of injuries came to our hospital. Of them, four have been sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment,” she said.

The Narsingdi District 100-Bed Hospital said around 20-30 people had been admitted with injuries, according to Supervisor Mizanur Rahman.

No major reports of building collapses have come in so far, but many buildings have reported cracks in their structures.
