Government issues gazette upgrading Bogura to city corporation

The new civic body now has 21 wards

Bangladesh has finally granted city corporation status to Bogura, turning the key northern city into the country’s newest metropolitan authority after years of demand and anticipation.

The Local Government Division issued the gazette on Thursday, following a foundation stone ceremony at Bogura Municipality on Apr 20, where Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the project framework.

The gazette confirms the formation under Section 3(3) of the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009, merging the municipality with surrounding expanded areas.

The new city corporation comprises 21 wards, incorporating parts of Sadar and Shahjahanpur upazilas along with the existing municipal area.

The included areas encompass Phulbari, Nishindara, Katnarpara, Sutrapur, Chokbrindabon, Malgram, Thanthania, Garamara, Maltinagar, Latifpur, Phuldighi, and Betgari.

Previously, the government instructed the deputy commissioner to issue a public notice on the expanded areas and collect feedback from local residents.

After reviewing public opinion and administrative reports, the decision to elevate Bogura to city corporation status was sealed.

Known as the gateway to northern Bangladesh, Bogura has long pushed for city corporation recognition.

Residents now expect that the new administrative structure will enhance urban management, infrastructure development, and the quality of civic services.

Established in 1876, Bogura Municipality initially operated with 12 wards.

Later in 2006, during the BNP tenure, it was expanded to 21 wards with the objective of upgrading it to a city corporation.
