A total of 430 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) platoons have been deployed across Bangladesh, including in border areas, on the occasion of the Durga Puja festival.
They have been tasked with providing security for 2,857 puja pavilions nationwide, the BGB said in a statement on Saturday.
"Twenty-four BGB base camps have been established across the country, including in border areas, to maintain law and order," the statement read.
The move aims to ensure a peaceful atmosphere throughout the largest religious festival for Bengali Hindus, it added.
Out of the total 2,857 puja sites, 1,411 are located within 8 kilometres of the border, the BGB said.
As many as 15 puja pavilions are in the hilly areas and the remaining 1,446 are outside the border regions.
Of the pavilions outside the border area, there are 441 in total within the limits of Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Gazipur city corporations; 694 in the Chattogram metropolitan area, Raozan, and Rangunia; and 311 in other places.
The BGB added that it is strengthening its intelligence surveillance and conducting special patrols in border areas to prevent any untoward incidents during the festival.
Meanwhile, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) announced the deployment of 281 patrol teams across Bangladesh as part of its “special security arrangement” for the Durga Puja.
The first phase of the Durga Puja this year officially began on Sep 21 with Mahalaya.
According to the lunar calendar, this year’s five-day main Durga Puja will begin on Sunday with Shashthi.
The Saptami, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami rituals will follow on Sept 29-30, and Oct 1-2 respectively, ending with the immersion of idols.
According to Hindu belief, the goddess will arrive on an elephant this year, seen as a symbol of plentiful harvests. But her departure on a palanquin is regarded as an omen of epidemic.
