The ruling party started distributing letters confirming the initial nomination among the aspirants on Sunday.

The surprise omission of some heavyweight leaders dominated the discussions among the Awami League supporters who gathered outside party chief Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office during the handing of letters.
A number of influential leaders, including Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, and organising secretaries AFM Bahauddin Nasim and BM Muzammel Haque are missing on the list.

Deputy Leader of Parliament Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury is not running with the Awami League’s ticket this time due to her old age. No name was announced in her stead until Sunday.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith had earlier announced his retirement for the same reason. His younger brother AK Abdul Momen will fight for the crucial Sylhet-1 constituency as expected.
Former general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam, who is undergoing treatment abroad for lung cancer, has been kept on the list jointly with another candidate.
Chief Whip ASM Feroz, former home minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir, Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, and Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister AKM Shajahan Kamal have also been nominated jointly with other candidates.
The party is yet to decide who it will nominate from among these candidates.

In Tangail, four MPs are biting dust. They include Khandaker Asaduzzaman, Khandaker Abdul Baten and Anupom Shahjahan Joy.
Md Faridul Haque Khan MP from Jamalpur has failed to impress the party this time. Rezaul Karim Hira MP from a different constituency in this district has been kept jointly with another candidate on the list.
Besides Arif Khan Joy, Chhabi Biswas and Iftiquar Uddin Talukder Pintu have lost the Awami League’s ticket in Netrakona.
