84 killed

An attacker ploughs a truck into Bastille Day crowds on the waterfront of the French Riviera city, killing at least 84 people. He was shot dead by officers at the scene. Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack but French authorities have yet to produce any evidence that the killer was radicalised.

Suicide bombers hit three Saudi cities in apparently coordinated attacks that targeted the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, US diplomats in Jeddah and Shi'ite Muslim worshippers in Qatif, jolting the kingdom as people prepared to break their fast on the penultimate day of the holy month of Ramadan. No group has claimed responsibility but Islamic State militants have carried out similar bombings in the US-allied, Sunni Muslim-ruled kingdom in the past year, targeting minority Shi'ites and Saudi security forces.

Islamist militants kill 20 foreigners, including nine Italians, seven Japanese, an Indian and an American, inside an upmarket restaurant in Dhaka's diplomatic area, before security forces storm the building and end a 12-hour standoff. Two policemen and two other locals are also killed in the attack. Claimed by Islamic State, the attack marked a major escalation in the scale and brutality of violence aimed at forcing strict Islamic rule onto Bangladesh.

45 killed

Forty-five people are killed and hundreds wounded when three militants open fire outside the international terminal at Istanbul's Ataturk airport. Two of them enter the building and blow themselves up, and the third detonates explosives at the entrance. Turkey blames Islamic State militants from the ex-Soviet Union for masterminding the attack.

A gunman kills 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando and declares his allegiance to Islamic State militants. He is shot and killed by police.

Brussels, Belgium

32 killed

Three Islamic State suicide bombers, all Belgian nationals, blow themselves up at Brussels airport and in a metro train in the Belgian capital, killing 32 people. Police find links with the November attacks in Paris.

A suicide bomber blows himself up on Istiklal Street, Istanbul's most popular shopping district, killing three Israeli tourists and an Iranian. The interior minister says the bomber was a Turkish member of Islamic State.

The Ouagadougou assault, claimed by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), killed 29 people from at least 18 countries and marked a major escalation of Islamist militancy in West Africa.

Suicide bombers and gunmen attack a shopping district near embassies and luxury hotels in the first attack claimed by Islamic State in the world's most populous Muslim country. Four people are killed and 23 others are injured when the militants bombed a Starbucks and police post before a stand-off in the nation's oldest department store.

A husband and wife kill 14 people at a workplace holiday party in San Bernardino in Southern California before being killed in a shootout with police.

Paris, France

130 killed

Paris is rocked by multiple, near simultaneous gun-and-bomb attacks on entertainment sites around the city, in which 130 people die and 368 are wounded. Islamic State claims responsibility. Two of the 10 known perpetrators were Belgian citizens and three others were French.

Gunmen kill five people outside a pre-Ashura event in the Shi'ite village of Saihat in Qatif. Islamic State has issued a statement saying it was behind the attack.

Two bombs explode seconds apart at a rally of pro-Kurdish activists and civic groups near Ankara's main train station, killing 102 people. Turkey blames suicide bombers who belong to an Islamic State cell from the southeast.

A suicide bomber blows himself up inside a packed Shi'ite Muslim mosque in Kuwait city during Friday prayers. The Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.

A gunman disguised as a tourist opens fire at a Tunisian hotel on Friday with a rifle he had hidden in an umbrella, killing 39 people including Britons, Germans and Belgians as they lounged at the beach in an attack claimed by Islamic State.

Gunmen wearing military uniforms storm Tunisia's national museum on Wednesday, killing 22 people in all, including French, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish visitors. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack although the Tunisian government said fighters from a local group, Okba Ibn Nafaa, that has been mostly based in the Chaambi mountains bordering Algeria, were involved.

Two Islamist militants break into an editorial meeting of satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo on Jan. 7 and rake it with bullets, killing 12. Another militant kills a policewoman the next day and takes hostages at a supermarket on Jan. 9, killing four before police shoot him dead. The attacks prompt a worldwide solidarity movement with the slogan "Je Suis Charlie" (I am Charlie).
