DMP spokesperson Masudur Rahman told bdnews24.com that the Opposition party has been granted persmission to hold the Friday evening rally at Suhrawardy Udyan.

“But the permission has been granted on certain conditions,” he said.

It was not yet known what the conditions were.

Earlier, the government had warned of tough action if trouble erupted during the proposed rally.

"Something might happen, but we don't think it would be that big. We do have some information as well," a senior minister told bdnews24.com but on condition of anonymity.

The minister said ensuring public security was “now” the government's top priority.

The administration has called out troops of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Dhaka, Narayanganj and Sylhet after having deployed them in the port city of Chittagong.

The Awami League is also prepared to "confront" the situation, said a member of the Central Working Committee.

The opposition BNP had sought permission to hold rally the same day at the Suhrwardy Udyan, Mohanagar Natya Manch in Gulistan or in front of its Naya Paltan headquarters.

Awami League leader Mahbub-Ul Alam Hanif said at the meeting of the party's city unit that they had formed 12 teams to observe BNP's activities on Friday.

The Awami League called on its activists to remain vigilant and alert after BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka called for ‘armed resistance’ if attacked.

In the wake of an imminent confrontation between the two major political parties, police had slapped a ban on rally in the capital until further notice.

Later, similar restrictions were enforced in Chittagong, Khulna and Barisal.

"We have information that (Jamaat-e-Islami) supporters will create chaos in different areas tomorrow (Friday)," Awami League minister Jahangir Kabir Nanok said at the meeting.

He asked activists for utmost vigil to ensure so that the Jamaat-e-Islami "can't turn Bangladesh in to Afghanistan".
