Chairman of the Bangladesh Environment Journalists Forum Kamrul Islam Chouwdhury, who is also a member of the probe panel, said the seven-strong body headed by BNP Vice Chairman and former Water Resources Minister Hafizuddin Ahmed visited the Sundarbans on Monday.

They thoroughly surveyed the affected areas and talked to local people and environment experts.

“We will also look into the issue of government’s negligence to prevent such natural disaster”, Hafizuddin Ahmed told bdnews24.com.

He said that they would share their findings with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday.

The other members of the committee are Shaikh Faridul Islam, convener of an environmental platform, “Shundorbon Raksha Andolan”, Khulna city mayor Moniruzzaman Moni, Bagerhat unit BNP president Abdus Salam and general secretary of BNP's Khulna unit Shafiqul Islam Mona.

An oil-tanker carrying more than 350,000 litres of furnace oil sank in Shela River on Dec 9.

The government temporarily shut the riverine route and started mopping up oil with locals' help.

The BNP claimed the accident was planned to harm the Sundarbans.

On Saturday, Khaleda Zia formed a committee to investigate the oil spill in the world’s largest mangrove forest.
