“They created an atmosphere of fairness and declared Selina Hayat Ivy the winner,” BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told reporters at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters on Friday.

“We accept the result if it truly is a reflection of the people’s will. But we can’t just brush aside what our candidate has alleged about rigging.”

Awami League’s Selina Hayat Ivy defeated her main challenger, the BNP’s Sakhawat Hossain Khan, by a margin of 79,568 votes on Thursday.

Sakhawat then alleged anomalies in the counting of votes even though he said the election was 'relatively fair'.

“It’s very important to look into what our candidate is saying. That is why the BNP is demanding a judicial probe into voting, counting and results of this election,” said Rizvi, the party’s senior joint secretary general.

This is Ivy’s second straight term as the city’s mayor but the first as Awami League’s candidate.
