The ruling party's local government election nomination board finalised the names of the candidates at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Ganabhaban on Friday.

The Awami League Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap said the board sat on Thursday and adjourned the meeting until Friday to pick the candidates.

Councils of 61 districts except the three in Chittagong Hill Tracts are going to the polls on Dec 28.

Around 700 Awami League leaders had solicited the party's support to fight for the Zila Parishad (district council) chairman posts in the election.

Elected representatives of several local government bodies like Upazila council, union council, and municipality will also elect 15 general councillors and five female councillors in the elections.

Unlike city corporation or union council, the Zila Parishad elections will be held with indirect participation of political parties, which are allowed to only support a candidate.

The BNP is boycotting the district council elections, alleging the results were already prepared.
