“We believe that the National Council sums up Awami League’s lust for power,” BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told reporters at a press briefing on Tuesday.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina clearly stated at the council that her party must rule again, and that they won’t let the BNP assume power at any cost,” said Rizvi.

Calling for a national election under a ‘neutral body’, the senior BNP leader demanded a new Election Commission be formed ‘upon consultation with everyone’ and through a search committee.

The two-day National Council was held at Dhaka’s Suhrawardy Udyan on Saturday and Sunday.

Hasina was re-elected as the party chief while Obaidul Quader was elected as the new general secretary.

Despite an invitation, the BNP skipped the event, which was attended by participants from more than 50 countries.

Rizvi, however, claimed that most of the political parties did not join council.
