“The government wants to keep him away from politics. The cases and convictions are meant for that,” Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Saturday.

“We want to spell it out clearly that the trials and conviction are totally political. We will tackle it legally as well as politically,” he told the media after returning from London.

On Thursday, the High Court scrapped the trial court’s verdict that acquitted BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s son, Tarique from charges of siphoning off Tk 200 million to Singapore.

He has been sentenced to seven years in prison and fined by Tk 200 million.

Asked whether the High Court’s verdict would be challenged, Mirza Fakhrul said, “We want to confront this issue legally and politically and that’s what we will do.”
