On Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Special Tribunal -1 took cognisance of the chargesheet submitted by police in the case filed under the Explosives Act over the arson on a bus.

It issued arrest warrants for 27 BNP leaders and ordered police to provide an update on the arrests on Jul 18.

Police pressed charges against 38 people in the case.

Of then, BNP chief Khaleda Zia, her adviser Khandker Mahbub Hossain and five others are out on bail.

In January last year, Khaleda, after a failed anti-government rally, called for a nonstop countrywide transport blockade which continued for three months.

The blockade was marred by widespread violence including arson , fire-bombings, crude bomb blasts and clashes that paralysed Bangladesh.

On Jan 23, at least 30 people were burnt when a bus was attacked at Jatrabarhi’s Katherpool.

One of the passengers, a contractor Nur Alam, succumbed to his burn injuries several days later at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
