High Court to deliver verdict over bail for Mirza Fakhrul on Nov 22

The High Court will decide on Nov 22 whether or not to give bail to BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in three cases of violence.

The bench of Justice Md Rezaul Haque and Justice Md Khasruzzaman was to give its verdict on Monday but postponed it.

“The court wants to examine a report by the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital concerning Mirza Fakhrul’s treatment,” said Deputy Attorney General Fazlur Rahman Khan on Monday.

The BNP acting secretary general was in jail for six months after his arrest on Jan 6 amidst a BNP-led agitation marking the first anniversary of the January 2014 general election the party had boycotted.

The High Court granted him a six-month bail on Apr 16 in three cases relating to arson, vandalism, and bombing. The cases had been filed at the Paltan Police Station.

The High Court granted him bail again on June 18 in two other cases lodged with the same police station and the Motijeel Police Station until police submitted their report. The Supreme Court upheld the order.

On June 21, the High Court approved his bail in the three cases. But the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division cancelled them on Nov 3 and ordered Fakhrul’s health check-up following a state appeal.

The court gave him bail to facilitate his treatment after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical College submitted a health report on July 13.

The BNP leader first went first to Singapore and then the US for treatment.

His bail was extended twice, until Nov 2, to enable his treatment.

The appellate bench, headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, rejected his fresh petition for a third extension on Nov 2 and ordered him to surrender before the trial court.
