“BNP is concerned about the country’s prestige as many international indices have shown Bangladesh’s downfall,” the party’s acting spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon said at a press briefing on Tuesday.

“Good governance and accountability do not exist anymore as there is no rule of law in the country now. The situation is gradually leading (Bangladesh) towards anarchy,” he said.

He alleged that the ruling Awami League’s ‘rowdy supporters’ were mostly responsible for the increase in crimes.

Regarding an international organisation’s recent report that ranked Bangladesh 7th among the top 10 countries where kidnappings are frequent, Ripon said the matter was of both concern and embarrassment for the people.

“Though there is no war in the country, murders and kidnappings are recurrent. Abductions and human trafficking are still happening.

‘Children and women are being tortured.”

The BNP’s international affairs secretary also cited the July 23 shooting in Magura, following a turf war between Awami Juba League affiliates, wherein a baby was shot inside her mother’s womb.

He alleged that the law-enforcing agencies were being negligent in their duties.

During the media call at BNP’s Naya Paltan headquarters in the afternoon, Ripon demanded release of senior BNP leaders from prison and withdrawal of ‘false’ cases against them.

He also claimed at least 35 BNP leaders and activists including Chowdhury Alam and M Ilias Ali were missing for several years.

He called for investigations by the FBI and the UK’s Scotland Yard under the UN human rights body’s supervision into their disappearances.
