The doctors made the call on Tuesday as a part of their programmes protesting against news reports in a Bengali daily and a on television channel on a female colleague.

Daily Jugantor, and Jamuna Television are the subsidiaries of Jamuna Group, owned by MP Islam’s husband Nurul Islam Babul.

The pro-AL Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (Swachip) staged a human-chain protest on Tuesday as part of their programmes.

At the programme, they called for boycotting Jamuna Group besides the MP.

They said the doctors were now united against the ‘vulgar lies’ and ‘yellow journalism’ of Daily Jugantor and Jamuna Television.

Dhaka’s Nawabganj MP Salma Islam alleged the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital’s (DMCH) emergency unit’s duty doctor Nunjirul Muhsenin Meem behaved roughly with her when she went to visit a patient on July 31.

The doctors alleged the Daily Jugantor and Jamuna Television tried to malign Dr Meem in their reports following the incident.

Earlier, Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) took up programmes in protest against the reports.

At the Swachip programme on Tuesday, BMA Secretary General Iqbal Arslan said, “The newspaper and television channel under the MP’s influence and ownership have been publishing one false report after another against Dr Meem.”

He asked them to stop such propaganda and apologise and observed that there was ‘some criminalisation’ of journalism profession.

The criminals were misusing the media after getting ownership of such outlets with illegal money, he said.
