The ruling party’s Advisory Council member also cautioned the BNP chief at a programme in Dhaka on Tuesday against the enemies within her party.

“Khaleda Zia is worried that the government will break up her party. All governments try to split opposition parties. But it has been proven in history that they can’t,” he said.

“People within the party often break it. Khaleda Zia’s son is enough to split the BNP,” he said without naming Tarique Rahman, Khaleda’s only surviving son.

The BNP chief lost her other son, Arafat Rahman Coco, early this year.

The former railways minister claimed that the party might split into ‘Zia’s BNP’, ‘Mahbubur Rahman’s BNP’ and such groups.

He warned the BNP and its allies against unleashing violence in any future anti-government movement.

Referring to the 20-Party alliance chief Khaleda, he said, “You decide whether you will pursue the politics of petrol bombs or a democratic movement.”

He said, “Khaleda Zia should take a call considering global politics.”

“Some politicians claimed the Cabinet would not be expanded anymore. This is ridiculous.”

He also praised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also the Awami League chief.

“She knows better who to promote, and who to demote. None has the power to decide on these matters expect God, up there in the sky and Sheikh Hasina on the ground.”
