“I can say with responsibility, journalists very consciously abstain from writing against drug abuse,” the mayor told a discussion marking the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at the city’s Muslim Hall on Friday.

He alleged many journalists even consume drugs every day.

The district’s deputy commissioner’s office and the Department of Narcotics Control jointly organised the programme.

Nasir Uddin said the media should play an effective role to save the new generation from the ‘evil clutches’ of narcotics.

“Only the law enforcing agencies cannot solve the problem. The media know better than me who sell the drugs and where.”

He said the solution to the problem would be ‘easier’ if the journalists help the police with information.

Nasir Uddin said drugs and terror went hand in hand.

“The new generation which is to lead the nation in future is now under the evil grip of drugs.”

He advised all for using own religious values to help save the youth.

The newly elected mayor also announced effective measures against narcotics with the help of the city corporation councillors.
