The party points to the illness of Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday after the death of jailed leader Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pintu on Sunday.

It organised a press conference at its Naya Paltan headquarters when Fakhrul was taken back to Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur after getting treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital.

International Affairs Secretary Asaduzzaman Ripon told the press conference: “We are anxiously observing that many of our arrested leaders are falling seriously ill following grilling and from lack of proper healthcare.”

“Though they were arrested in good condition, some of them are dying, some are being taken to hospital and some others are sick in jail,” he said.

Many of the top BNP leaders are in jail in cases over violence during protests.

The party alleged arrested leaders Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdus Salam Pintu, Shamser Mobin Chowdhury, MA Mannan, Shamsuzzaman Dudu and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi were ill, too.

Ripon said, “We are worried that Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sent back to the jail without admitting him at the hospital for treatment.”

“We saw him being taken to the hospital in a wheelchair. He was not in a wheelchair when he was arrested at the Press Club five months ago.

“He was taken to remand and he is in wheelchair now,” he said.

Ripon further alleged that Pintu, who was serving a life term in Rajshahi Jail for his involvement in the 2009 BDR mutiny, died because of negligence.

“The prison authorities disobeyed the High Court order to treat him in a specialised hospital,” he said.

BNP leader Ripon said the ruling Awami League was acting hostile to the opposition parties.

“The people of the country wish an end to this politics of vengeance,” he said.
