US welcomes city polls

The US has welcomed the upcoming corporation elections in Dhaka and Chittagong, and called upon the authorities to ensure those are “free, fair and non-violent”.

Washington also reminded the political parties that in democratic practices there was “no room for violence or intimidation”.

Replying to a question on Thursdayin Washington, State Department’s Acting Spokesperson Marie Harf  said: “We welcome the announcement of municipal elections ( in Bangladesh) ".

Announcement of the city corporation elections schedule has apparently ended the months of uncertain political situation in Bangladesh.

The BNP has been agitating against the Awami League-led government dubbing it as ‘illegal’ ever since the general election last year on Jan 5 that it boycotted.

But the party has endorsed its candidates in this non-political city polls, ending nearly three months long violent blockades and strikes for a snap general election.

The state department spokesperson said the US called on those who were administering the election and those who were participating “to uphold their responsibility to ensure they are free, fair, and nonviolent”.

“We have encouraged the Government of Bangladesh and the elections commission to protect citizens’ rights to free expression and association during the campaign, again, to ensure free, fair election on polling day.

“We also expect all parties to follow democratic practices, and really, there could be no room here for violence or intimidation,” said the acting spokesperson at the state department’s regular press briefing.

Voting will be held on Apr 28.
