He has suggested scrapping nominations and introducing voting along party lines instead.

“I think it is time we changed the polling system,” he told a discussion in Dhaka on Thursday.

“A new system to vote for the party abolishing the nominations system has to be introduced,” Rauf, member of a pro-BNP citizens’ group, said.

The former CEC’s comment came when city corporations in Dhaka and Chittagong were gearing up for the much-hyped Apr 28 polls.

He said the system of voting for political parties instead of candidates was there in several European countries.

Rauf lamented the lack of powers of the Election Commission.

“The ruling party influences elections as they did in the past... The EC is powerless. They just stand by and watch,” he added.
