Reacting to BNP Joint Secretary General Barkatullah Bulu’s statement slating the city polls, Awami League Presidium Member Quader on Thursdaytermed the party’s movement a ‘farce’.

He was speaking to reporters on current issues after placing wreath at the nation’s founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s grave at Tungiparha in Gopalganj to mark the Independence Day.

He said the BNP’s agitation could not be called a movement anymore.

“It has become a farce. They have now termed the city corporation polls a farce to cover up the joke that their movement has degenerated into.

“They are taking part in the polls even after this,” Quader said.

Many BNP leaders have collected nomination papers to run the mayoral race in Dhaka and Chittagong cities even though the party is yet to formally give them the go-ahead.

He pointed out the BNP-backed candidates had won several city corporation elections under the supervision of the current government to hammer the point that the government was not influencing the ballots.

He slated BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for calling indefinite blockade.

“She has announced to continue with the movement until it meets a logical conclusion. But an illogical movement cannot lead to any logical outcome,” he said.
