“The government wants the BNP to resume democratic practice by taking part in the polls,” he said replying to a question in Barisal on Saturday.
Polls to three city corporations in Dhaka and Chittagong will take place on Apr 28. Nomination submission deadline is Mar 29.
The BNP, which sat out last year’s national polls and is now pressing for a snap election, is yet to announce its decision on the polls.
On Friday, pro-BNP academic Emajuddin Ahmed claimed BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia ‘appeared positive’ about the city elections when they met.
Most of the parties have already finalised their candidates.
BNP’s Standing Committee Member Mahbubur Rahman on Friday said they would decide on the city polls soon.
