Opposition Leader Raushon asks govt to act tough to stop violence

Leader of the Opposition Raushon Ershad has urged the government to take stern measures to prevent acts of sabotage.

Speaking at an unscheduled discussion in Parliament on Tuesday, she said her Jatiya Party would support the government's efforts.

"Those creating disorder should be dealt with harshly. Everyone should join forces to build up resistance from the bottom up," she said.

The BNP, which boycotted the last parliamentary elections, has been enforcing an indefinite blockade across Bangladesh since Jan 5 demanding a snap election under a 'neutral government'.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday said the blockade would continue until further announcement.

At least 27 people have been killed in blockade-related violence, government figures show.

"Who'll take responsibility for these deaths?" Raushon asked.

She said the people did not want to see any more violence.

"Violence can never be part of a [political] party's programme. Shutdowns and blockades are means to realise demand and not to create anarchy.

"These must be stopped."

Raushon said the ongoing agitations hit the public life hardest.

"Fifteen hundred vehicles have been damaged. The garments sector is being harmed..." she said.

Businesses have been urging the political parties to refrain from enforcing violent programme.

Apex trade body FBCCI earlier this month said they were considering moving the court for a ban on violent political programmes like shutdowns and transport blockades.

"I'd like to ask one thing. Why are you creating anarchy?" Raushon asked Khaleda whose party does not have any representation in Parliament.

"You can't go on doing politics with this attitude. You won't be able to work for the people's welfare."
