BNP's Gazipur unit chief AKM Fazlul Haq made the call on Friday after a meeting of the party's Standing Committee and senior leaders at Khaleda's Gulshan office in Dhaka.

The district administration imposed Section 144 at Bhawal Badre Alam Government College ground and surrounding areas amid tensions after ruling Awami League's student front said it would thwart Khaleda's rally on Saturday.

BNP spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir condemned the move and dubbed it a "government ploy".

Khaleda has been appearing in public rallies more often after the Jan 5 polls to drum up support for a snap election.

Saturday's planned rally was part of the effort.

The BNP chief will not travel to Gazipur now that the general strike had been called, said Fakhrul.
