They have taken the initiative to exchange views with the present crop of student leaders.

Former DUCSU vice president Amanullah Aman, who is also the BNP's joint secretary general, said the students' convention to plan the agitation would be held at the Engineers Institute in Dhaka on Dec 18.

Former Chhatra League chief Habibur Rahman Habib, Chhatra Union president Mostafizur Rahman Babul, DUCSU general secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon, assistant general secretary Najimuddin Alam, Chhatra Dal leaders Asaduzzaman Ripon, Fazlul Haq Milon, Shirin Sultana, Shaheeduddin Chowdhury Annee, Habibul Islam Habib, Ganatantrik Chhatra League's Saifuddin Ahmed Moni, Jagpa Chhatra League's Khandker Lutfor Rahman, Asadur Rahman Khan, among others, were present at the briefing.

Aman claimed the incumbent government was "worse than the autocratic regime of HM Ershad".
"We can't sit idle any more. We've decided to hold a students' convention in Dhaka by coordinating with the current and former leaders of then DUCSU and All-Party Students' Unity.
"It will be the same as the one we held on Oct 1, 1990 which had paved way for the fall of the military dictator."

Monday's announcement came after BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's call for agitations to press for a snap election under a non-party 'neutral' government.

The former student leaders said they had much the same goal as their party chief.

Aman said Khaleda would address the Dec 18 convention and added that other student organisations currently involved in anti-government movement had also been invited.

When asked if the BNP ally Jamaat-e-Islami's student affiliate Islami Chhatra Shibir had been invited, he said, "Student fronts of anti-Ershad movement will be there."

Shibir was not part of the '90s All-Party Students' Unity.

Aman claimed the people wanted to be free of the Awmai League rule.

"We want to take a vow to topple this government in the shortest possible time under Khaleda Zia's leadership," he added.
